Icon-Role Model-Hero
Monday, July 21, 2008

Ang aga aga, badtrip. There was a problem with the LRT trains that why there were many stranded commuters, including me. And because of that, I was late, or absent na I guess. Nakakainis talaga. Tsk. The professor was kind of—nevermind. I mean, she’s strict with attendance that’s why I had to secure a permit or excuse slip from the Coordinators’ Office pa. Hassle! Argh. I wish I can come to class earlier tomorrow.

We had our first day of Nursing Law, Jurisprudence and Professional Ethics. The professor started the concept with reviews of past discussions in NCM101, PSTL and Nursing research and several stuffs from our AHSE days. She also did the usual first day-getting to know-expectations stuff. She asked us to state our name, where we came from, our expectations for the concept and lastly, our icon of leadership.

My classmates mentioned famous people like Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Theresa, Jose Rizal and other political figures.

When I was asked, I didn’t think hard. The first person that came to my mind is Mr. Felix Zarate, my dad.

Well, he’s really my icon, role model, and hero, whatever you want to call it.

The three characteristics that I mentioned about my dad are: God-fearing, hard-working, and was-still able to endure sacrifices for us.

He is God-fearing, though he’s oceans away, he was still able to instill into us spiritual values that are necessary in this life.

He was able to tolerate sacrifices in this life just to be a good provider. I can’t mention them all, but one most important thing is that he sacrificed being away from us to be able to offer us the things we want and need.

And lastly, he is really hard-working. Enough said, it’s obvious.

In relation to Nursing, these three characteristics are very important.

I believe that if you put GOD in the center of your life, you would be able to walk the path of righteousness, thus, you will be an upright person and righteous nurse.

In order to be a good nurse, you must be able to make some sacrifices in order to attend to your duties. And lastly, you must be hard-working, in this profession every second counts, there’s no room for errors because the lives of our patient’s are in our hands.
